Keep Your Dogs Cool In The August Heat (August 2024 Free Desktop & Mobile Wallpaper )
Summertime is the season we all look forward to! Long sunny days mean longer walks and more fun activities with your dog.
But remember, August is the hottest month of the year, with average daily highs reaching 24.4 °C. If you feel hot in this weather, imagine how your furry friend with their thick coat and sensitive paws feels—it’s even more intense for them!
While you and your dog enjoy the great weather, keep these essential dog care tips in mind:
1. Keep Up With Doggie Haircuts And Grooming
Dogs, just like kids, love getting messy and dirty when they're outside! So, expect to groom or clean your dog more often during the summer. Depending on your dog's breed, coat type, and personality, this could mean more baths, rinses after swimming, regular haircuts, or more trips to the groomer.
Some breeds can have their hair trimmed short without any problems, but others shouldn't be cut too short or shaved unless your vet says it's okay for medical reasons.
Remember to consider how your dog’s hair will grow back after a trim or shave to avoid surprises like long-term hair loss. It's a good idea to chat with your groomer or vet about how often your dog should be groomed and how short their hair should be cut. You can also consider partial grooming like trimming nails or paws. If you’re comfortable, you can do this at home, or you can get it done by a professional.
2. Brush, and Brush Some More!
No matter the season, brushing your dog’s coat is a great way to keep them looking their best and spend some quality time together.
Most dogs love the attention they get during brushing (no more social distancing once the brush comes out!). Plus, every dog benefits from a good brushing!
💡 BONUS TIP: While any time is a good time to brush, doing it after a bath or swim is especially effective.
3. Don't Forget The Paws
Keeping your dog’s paw hair trimmed short can make a big difference, especially for active dogs that love hiking or spending time outdoors. Short paw hair helps prevent weeds, foxtails, and twigs from getting tangled up.
Regular nail trims are also super important. Short, well-kept nails are healthier and less likely to break or get injured. If your dog is okay with you trimming their nails, do it regularly. If they’re not a fan, try gentle trimming with lots of treats as rewards to make the experience more positive.
Some dogs really hate nail trims, so working with your vet or a groomer can help make it a better experience. Some dogs might prefer a dremel over clippers for nail care. It might take some time, but hopefully, it can become a tolerable, if not enjoyable, routine.
4. Keep Fleas And Ticks Away
Summer is prime time for fleas in many areas! Flea and tick seasons vary by state, so we made a list here for you.
Make sure your pets are protected from fleas all year, or at least during the warmer months if you live in a seasonal flea area. Remember, topical flea treatments can lose effectiveness if your dog swims or bathes within 1-2 days of application. Talk to your vet about the best flea prevention products and how to use them properly.
For tick prevention, even within city limits, our many green spaces mean exposure to parasites. Just like with flea prevention, there are various tick prevention products available, some of which protect against both fleas and ticks. Consult your vet to find the best option for your pets.
5. Don't Forget To Hydrate
During the hot summer months, it’s essential to keep your pets hydrated, just like we need to be. Make sure to refill their water dish regularly. Some dogs might struggle with long periods in the sun or extended activity in the heat.
Keep in mind your pet’s breed, age, and health status, and only let them exert themselves as much as they can handle safely.
💡BONUS TIP: Grab A Wearable And Breathable Mesh Harness!
The summer mesh harness features a mesh construction that keeps your dog cool during the sunny weather. With its breathable and lightweight material, your dog will surely enjoy your walking adventures.
