Do Dog Sleep Like Humans?

Do Dog Sleep Like Humans?

Dogs are pretty amazing—they’re loyal, easy to train, and they can fall asleep anywhere, anytime. Like us, dogs are most active during the day and usually get most of their sleep at night. But unlike humans, they sleep in short bursts throughout the day.

How Much Sleep Do Dogs Need?

On average, dogs sleep 10 to 12 hours a day. Puppies and older dogs usually sleep even more because they need extra rest to recharge. Younger adult dogs (ages 1–5) tend to have more consistent sleep schedules.

Why Do Dogs Sleep So Much?

How much your dog sleeps depends on their breed, age, activity level, and even personality. Sleep is super important for their health—it helps their immune system, brain, and memory.

What your dog does during the day also affects how they sleep. If they’re learning new tricks or commands, their brain works overtime while they sleep, especially during deep REM sleep. Stressful experiences can also make a difference. Dogs who have a bad day might sleep longer and more deeply afterward.

Active dogs—those who get plenty of walks and playtime—tend to fall asleep quicker and get better rest. Where they sleep matters too. Dogs who sleep indoors usually rest for 80% of the night, but outdoor sleepers might only get 60% of their night in.

Is It Normal for Dogs to Sleep All Day?

As dogs age, it’s normal for them to sleep more and wake up earlier for potty breaks. But if your dog suddenly starts sleeping a lot more—or a lot less—it could be a sign of a health issue, like arthritis, diabetes, or thyroid problems. When in doubt, check with your vet.

Signs Your Dog Isn’t Sleeping Enough

Just like us, dogs can get cranky or stressed if they don’t get enough sleep. If your dog seems anxious, overly tired, or is acting out of the ordinary, they might not be resting enough. Certain health problems can also mess with their sleep, so a trip to the vet could help figure things out.

How to Help Your Dog Sleep Better

A well-rested dog is a happy dog! Here’s how to help your furry friend get the sleep they need:

1. Stick to a Routine

Dogs love routine. Try to keep their schedule consistent—feed them, walk them, and go to bed around the same time every day. Letting them out in the morning to soak up some sunshine can also help keep their internal clock on track.

2. Give Them Plenty of Exercise

A tired dog is a sleepy dog! Regular walks and playtime help them burn off energy and get ready for bed. Plus, it’s a great way to bond with your pup.

3. Make Bedtime Relaxing

Turn off the TV, dim the lights, and give your dog a cozy spot to settle down. A little petting before bed can help them relax. If your dog is nervous or anxious, calming aids like essential oils or snug-fitting anxiety wraps might do the trick.

4. Find the Perfect Bed

Pay attention to how your dog likes to sleep. Do they sprawl out or curl up? Choose a bed that matches their style. Some dogs love a roomy bed, while others prefer a snug space. And let’s be real—most dogs would rather sleep with their human if given the chance (86% of them, to be exact).

With a good routine and a comfy spot to sleep, your pup will be well-rested, healthier, and happier.
