Why it’s Important to Choose the Right Harness for a Yorkie
Yorkshire Terriers, often called Yorkies, are small and spirited dogs known for their confident and lively personalities. Despite their tiny size, they possess a big personality and an abundance of energy. They are intelligent, curious, and affectionate companions that bring joy and entertainment to their owners.
Despite their small stature, Yorkies are known for being fearless and bold. Yorkshire Terriers were originally bred to hunt and catch rats in textile mills. While modern Yorkies are now lap-loving companions, they have not lost their tenacity. They tend to be quite vocal and will alert their owners to any perceived threat or unfamiliar sound. This makes them excellent watchdogs despite their size.
Yorkies have a playful nature and affectionate temperament that make them suitable for families with children, as well as individuals looking for a loyal and entertaining companion. Because they are a more delicate breed, some extra care is required for safety. One way to ensure their safety and comfort is to use a well-fitting harness for your Yorkie.
Understanding a Yorkie's Energy and Exercise Needs
Despite their small size, Yorkies have moderate energy levels and require regular exercise to keep them happy and healthy. While they don't have the same exercise needs as larger breeds, it's important to provide them with physical activity and mental stimulation to prevent boredom and potential behavioral issues. Yorkies benefit from daily exercise in the form of walks, playtime, and interactive games.
When exercising your Yorkie, aim for thirty minutes to one hour of exercise per day. However, it's important to note that exercise should be spread out throughout the day rather than provided all at once. It’s also important to note that Yorkies have sensitive respiratory systems, so be mindful of extreme weather conditions. During hot weather, opt for walks during cooler times of the day to prevent overheating. In cold weather, consider providing them with a sweater or coat to keep them warm during outdoor activities.
The Importance of Training a Yorkie
All dogs can benefit from proper training, and Yorkies are not an exception. For one, training helps promote good behavior, socialization, and safety. It also helps establish a strong bond between you and your Yorkie. Yorkies are social dogs, and they will love spending extra time with you during frequent training sessions.
Yorkies, like many other small breeds, can be prone to pulling or darting during walks due to their energetic nature and strong prey drive. This is where a harness becomes valuable. Using a harness, especially one designed specifically for small breeds like the Yorkie, provides better control and reduces the strain on their delicate necks. Unlike flat collars, harnesses distribute the pressure more evenly across the chest and shoulders. This makes walks more comfortable and safer for both you and your Yorkie.
By using a suitable small breed harness, Yorkshire Terrier owners can take comfort in knowing their dog is safe and secure at all times. Through positive and patient training and the right harness, you can build a strong bond with your Yorkie and enjoy the rewarding journey of training your dog.
What is the Best Yorkie Harness?
When searching for the best harness for Yorkies, the fit is very important. Yorkies have unique body proportions, so a harness that fits them well is essential for their comfort and safety. Look for a highly adjustable harness that accommodates your Yorkie's size and shape. This is particularly important for small dogs like Yorkies, as an ill-fitting harness can cause discomfort, chafing, or even restrict their movement.

I have two different sized Yorkies, one rather large and one medium. I ordered medium for both. That was a bit large for my smaller girl, so I ordered another one in small and it works perfectly for both. I donated the other medium to my vet. This is the most ingenious design, and well worth the money, if nothing else, it saves aggravation on the pup!

Anyone who thinks a seven-pound can't pull while on a walk has never met a Yorkie who just spotted a squirrel. This is perfect for even the littlest of determined terriers.
