Pugs are a loveable breed in the toy group, popular in part for their unique appearance and charming personality. Their distinctive wrinkled face, short muzzle, and large, expressive eyes make them endearing to many people. Pugs are often associated with being cute and comical, which appeals to a wide range of dog lovers. Additionally, their small size makes them suitable for various living situations, including apartments, which has also contributed to their popularity.

Pugs have a long history dating back to ancient China, where they were bred as companion dogs for the Chinese nobility. They were highly regarded and were often seen accompanying members of the royal court. Today, they continue to be highly adaptable companion dogs with a great sense of humor and clownish antics. Pugs have a lot of personality in a little body!

Size and Weight

Bulldogs are small but sturdy dogs with a compact build and a square-shaped body. According to AKC standards, adult Pugs typically stand about 14 to 15 inches tall at the shoulder. Healthy Pugs generally weigh between 14 and 18. Of course, some Pugs will be larger or smaller than the breed standard.

Energy Level and Exercise Requirements

Pugs are a brachycephalic breed, which means they have a short, flat snout. Due to their facial structure, they are prone to breathing difficulties and can overheat easily. As a result, they are not an overly energetic breed.

However, Pugs enjoy short bursts of activity, such as play sessions or walks, but they do not require extensive exercise. A moderate daily walk and some interactive playtime should suffice to keep them physically and mentally stimulated. It's important to avoid excessive exercise in hot weather to prevent respiratory issues. However, Pugs are prone to obesity, so it is important that they get some exercise

Due to Pugs being predisposed to breathing problems, most owners prefer to walk their pups using a harness for added safety.

What is the Best Pug Harness?

For Pugs, like many brachycephalic breeds, it is safer to walk them on a harness instead of a flat collar. Many Pugs have a tendency to develop respiratory issues or tracheal sensitivity. Wearing a collar that puts pressure on their throat can cause discomfort and irritate their breathing passages. A well-fitted harness, on the other hand, can be more comfortable for them, allowing unrestricted breathing and movement during walks.

When selecting the best Pug harness, it's important to choose one that fits properly and is specifically designed for their unique body shape. A well-fitting harness should allow for comfortable movement while preventing any rubbing or chafing. A well-fitted harness should also be escape-proof.

At Joyride Harness, we created our harness with Pugs in mind. Our fully-adjustable harnesses can fit the proportions and body shape of most dogs, including Pugs. Additionally, with our easy-on, easy-off style, Joyride Harness does not go around your dog’s neck, enabling you to have a safer walking experience.

While Pugs are not the most active dog breed, they can be strong-willed or easily distracted during walks. Our harnesses are designed to prevent pulling, thanks to our three-ring design. You can attach a standard leash to one of the side rings to stop your Pug from pulling forward or use a double-ended leash attached to two rings to give you even further control. Since our harnesses do not put pressure on the neck, there is minimal risk of injury even if your dog tries to pull.

The other benefit of Joyride Harness for small dogs like the Pug is our built-in handle. A handled harness is great for Pugs because you can quickly grab them whenever necessary. Whether your pup needs a boost over a rock scramble or you need to hold them back from a squirrel, you can take comfort in knowing you have control and won’t put pressure on your delicate Pug’s neck.

When it comes to exercising this goofy breed, control and safety are both important. Keep your baby safe with the best harness for Pugs: Joyride Harness.

What Size Harness Should I Buy for a Pug?

Most adult Pugs will fit in our small or medium dog harness. Our small size suits dogs between 10 and 19 pounds while our medium is suitable for dogs between 20 and 40 pounds. If your Pug is stocky with a wider chest, we recommend using our size chart to go by girth measurement to find the perfect size.

Perfect for my Pug

My daughter suggested this harness after she got one for her lab, I ordered one for my sweet little pug and I am so happy that I did! So easy to get on and to adjust whenever I have to put her winter clothes on as well. She's much more comfortable in this than anything I was able to find in the stores and the red and white heart print is adorable!

Wish I had found this harness sooner!

My one year old pug pulls so hard that he chokes himself - even while wearing a harness.

We’ve tried numerous harnesses that either don’t fit well or are challenging to put on (our pup doesn’t like to stand still). His new Joyride harness is so easy to put on and now when he pulls he isn’t choking himself. I highly recommend this harness!

Perfect fit for our broad-chested pug!

We've had the harness for about a week now and are very pleased with it. I was looking for something new for our pug that didn't put too much pressure on his throat, as he has a tendency to pull to the point of choking/coughing. This harness does the trick! It sits nicely over the broad part of his chest and has great clearance around his neck. No more choking!
