Why it’s Important to Choose the Right Harness for a Greyhound

Greyhounds are a magnificent breed of dog known for their graceful and slender physiques. They are gentle, noble, and sweet-tempered companions that have been beloved by artists, kings, and poets for thousands of years. Today, they are still just as loved and are one of the most popular hounds in the world.

Greyhounds take the crown for the fastest dog breed, capable of reaching speeds up to 45 miles per hour. That means if your greyhound gets loose, good luck catching them! Because greyhounds are so quick and love to run, it is important to keep them secure when outside. To keep your Greyhound safe and comfortable during walks, having the right harness is key.

For Greyhounds and their adoring owners, a well-fitting harness plays an important part in maintaining their comfort, safety, and mobility. That’s why Joyride Harness offers a range of high-quality harnesses designed specifically for Greyhounds, ensuring that your beloved companion can enjoy their walks with ease.

Understanding a Greyhound’s Energy and Exercise Needs

Greyhounds are often called “40-mile-per-hour couch potatoes” because, despite their incredible speed, they have a relatively low energy level. Most greyhounds are content with shorter bursts of activity followed by ample rest. However, regular exercise remains crucial to maintaining their overall health and well-being. Going on walks or engaging in moderate exercise helps Greyhounds maintain a healthy weight, stimulate their senses, and prevent boredom.

The best way to exercise a Greyhound is through a combination of daily walks and opportunities for short bursts of intense activity. Greyhounds have a natural inclination to sprint, so incorporating regular leash walks and jogging into their routine helps maintain their overall fitness. Additionally, allowing them to run freely in a securely enclosed area or using a long leash in an open space provides an outlet for their incredible speed and agility. However, Greyhounds have thin skin and minimal body fat, making them more susceptible to extreme temperatures, so exercise should be adjusted accordingly in hot or cold weather.

The Importance of Training a Greyhound

Although gentle and sweet, Greyhounds maintain an independent spirit. This means that training is a fundamental aspect of owning a greyhound, regardless of age or background. Greyhounds are generally well-mannered and adaptable, and proper training helps reinforce good behavior and strengthens the bond between you and your furry companion.

The best way to reinforce good training is with the right training tools. And for many owners, the best way to train their Greyhound is with a reliable harness. Using a well-fitted harness during training sessions provides better control and reduces the risk of pulling or sudden movements. It also helps prevent escapes, which is especially important for newly adopted Greyhounds.

What is the Best Greyhound Harness?

When it comes to choosing the best harness for your Greyhound, durability, comfort, and functionality are key factors to consider. Greyhounds have a unique body shape, and it can be difficult to find a harness with a proper fit. However, with Joyride Harness, our highly adjustable harnesses are available in six sizes so Greyhound owners can take comfort in avoiding the slip. We also line our harnesses with cloud-like fleece to help protect your baby’s delicate skin.

Pulling can be another issue with Greyhounds, especially if they have a need for speed. However, with Joyride Harness's innovative side-ring technology, you can gently discourage pulling. This allows you to focus on positive reinforcement and creating a well-behaved Greyhound that you can be proud of.

At Joyride Harness, we understand the deep love and devotion Greyhound owners have for their furry companions. We strive to provide high-quality harnesses that not only meet their needs but also enhance their overall walking experience. Our harnesses are designed with care and attention to detail, prioritizing your Greyhound's comfort and safety.

What Size Harness Should I Buy for a Greyhound?

Many Greyhound owners struggle to find the right size dog harness because of the breed’s unique shape. When it comes to a Joyride Harness, most adult Greyhounds will fit in our XL dog harness, which is suitable for dogs between 60 and 85 pounds. However, for smaller Greyhounds and puppies, we recommend using our size chart to find the best harness fit.

Greyhound senior

The quality is excellent. We purchased this style because of the top handle. After slipping a fleece sleeve on the harness girth (from a horse halter) we can use the handle to help her up stairs & into the car. She's 14, tall, and 66 lbs....the XL gives a lot of sizing options, like when it must be fitted over-top her winter jacket. It is on the heavy-duty side & might be a bit much for the small/lighter breeds (unless Joyride compensates material weight w/ that in mind). At any rate, highly recommend!

My go-to for harnesses

I sent my “foster” harness away with my latest foster greyhound when it was time for her to go to her next foster on her way to adoption in another state. She was a flight risk when I first got her to foster, and had slipped out of a thunder leash at the kennel. The ease of putting it on, and the security of it are great plusses. This is my fourth Joyride harness purchase.

Incredible product!

We ordered the Falk Plaid Harness for our still-young greyhound, who pulled and liked to rear up and spin when he'd see other dogs. Incredible product, price and service and it worked like a charm! Will definitely recommend (and have already) Joyride to others. Love the selection of fabrics, too!

The interesting thing for me about this harness was I bought 2, one in green plaid and one in a fall plaid for my 14 month 59 pound Borzoi. I moved the green to a smaller fit and moved the fall colors to a large fit to see how my big male greyhound would do. He is 95 pounds and it fit fine. That is an impressive range.

For my old hound I like the middle ring as I can help him get up. The side ring works well with my Borzoi teenager as we practice loose leash walking.

It is easy in and easy off as well.

This harness is amazing! My greyhound Dax and his best friend Bowie love the "freedom" of this harness. In the beginning Dax kept looking back to see if I was there. I feel good that nothing is pulling at his larynx. It's so easy to control him if necessary. The handle is a wonderful feature if an aggressive dog is walking by. It is so sturdy and so easy to put on, unlike other harnesses. Several people have stopped us to get the name of the harness. Great product!
