Why it’s Important to Choose the Right Harness for a Great Dane

Great Danes are majestic and gentle giants known for their impressive size and noble appearance. They are one of the largest dog breeds in the world, standing tall with a commanding presence. Despite their massive stature, Great Danes are renowned for their friendly and affectionate nature. They truly are "gentle giants” and make wonderful family companions.

Originating from Germany, Great Danes have a rich history that dates back centuries. They were initially bred as hunting dogs, specifically for tracking and taking down large game, such as wild boars. Over time, their role expanded, and they became valued as estate guardians and symbols of prestige among European nobility.

Despite their large size, Great Danes are generally gentle and non-aggressive, making them well-suited for various living situations, including apartments, as long as they receive adequate exercise and space to stretch their legs. Of course, due to their giant size, maintaining control over a Dane is paramount. For Great Dane owners, having the right dog harness is key to providing these gentle giants safe and secure exercise!

Understanding a Great Dane’s Energy and Exercise Needs

Great Danes may be large in size, but their energy levels are surprisingly moderate compared to other breeds. However, while they are not excessively active, regular exercise is still important to keep them happy and healthy. Engaging in appropriate levels of exercise helps maintain their physical health, prevents obesity, and promotes mental stimulation.

One of the best ways to exercise a Great Dane is through daily walks. These walks provide an opportunity for them to stretch their legs, explore their surroundings, and stimulate their senses. However, it's crucial to be mindful of their size and strength, as Great Danes have the potential to pull or lunge if they become excited or see something of interest. This is why many Great Dane owners prefer to exercise their giant breed using a harness.

In addition to walks, other low-impact activities such as gentle play sessions, swimming, or mental stimulation exercises can also be beneficial for Great Danes. These activities help keep their minds and bodies active without placing excessive strain on their joints.

The Importance of Training a Great Dane

Although gentle and sweet, Great Danes are large, powerful dogs, which makes training a very important aspect of owning one. Despite their gentle nature, their size and strength alone can make them challenging to handle if they are not properly trained. Training helps establish a bond between owner and dog, promotes good behavior, and ensures the safety of the dog and those around them.

Training a Great Dane can address specific challenges such as leash manners and proper behavior around guests. Since they are large and strong, teaching them proper leash etiquette ensures enjoyable and safe walks for everyone. And the best way to reinforce good training is with the right training tools. And for many owners, the best way to train their Great Dane is with a reliable harness. Using a well-fitted harness during training sessions provides better control and reduces the risk of pulling or sudden movements.

What is the Best Great Dane Harness?

When it comes to choosing the best harness for a Great Dane, you need to consider several factors. Given their size and strength, it's important to opt for a harness specifically designed for large and powerful breeds. Large breed harnesses provide better control over the dog's movements, making it easier to manage them during walks. This is particularly important for preventing sudden lunges or pulls that can be challenging to control with just a collar and leash. They also minimize the risk of injury because they distribute pressure more evenly across the dog's body, reducing the strain on the neck.

Finding the right harness for a giant breed such as a Great Dane can be challenging. But at Joyride Harness, our dog harnesses can accommodate large and giant breeds! Great Danes come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and our fully adjustable harness ensures you get a perfect fit every time. They’re also made from high-quality materials that can withstand the power and strength of a Great Dane. We use reinforced stitching and sturdy hardware to ensure the harness can handle the weight and pulling force.

Pulling can be another issue with Great Danes, and at their size, it can be a major problem for whoever is holding the leash! However, with Joyride Harness's innovative side-ring technology, you can gently discourage pulling. This allows you to focus on positive reinforcement and creating a well-behaved Great Dane that you can be proud of. For an added level of control, every harness has a heavy-duty handle built into the design.

What Size Harness Should I Buy for a Great Dane?

Many Great Dane owners struggle to find the right size dog harness because of the breed’s giant size. When it comes to a Joyride Harness, most adult Great Danes will fit in our XXL dog harness, which is suitable for dogs between 85 and 140 pounds. For Great Dane puppies, we recommend using our size chart to find the best harness fit at their current size.

LOVE IT!!! Why did I wait so long?!

Having a Great Dane puppy, I waited until he got to 6mos to buy the Joyride harness so I didn’t need to upgrade. But I wish I had purchased earlier. The Joyride harness is so easy to get on & off, especially the single chest clip.

Does it fit a 165 LB Great Dane? Yes it does!

Our Great Dane, Della is 10 months old, and has gone through two supposedly heavy duty harnesses while she was growing, mainly because they were uncomfortable for her. When I put the Joyride Harness on her, she didn't mind it at all. She doesn't try to bite through the harness, and the handle makes it much easier to keep her under control when we have to take her out of the house.

I LOVE THIS HARNESS. Oliver(Great Dane) quit pulling and I enjoy our walks now. It's so easy to put on and he loves to wear it. I think it makes him feel safe and secure. This one comes with little lights but they don't fit on the larger D-rings. He wears the XXL. He's 115 lbs and has a deep chest. It also works with his jacket since it's adjustable. I really do love this product. I used to have to walk him using a prong collar and he still pulled. I was so happy at how calm he was on our first walk with the harness.
