Chihuahuas are a small breed of dog known for their feisty and lively personality. They are a popular breed partly due to their small size and adorable appearance. Their tiny stature, expressive eyes, and distinctive apple-shaped head make them visually appealing to many people. Chihuahuas are often called “purse dogs” due to their size and portability, which makes them well-suited for apartment living or frequent fliers looking for a travel companion.

Chihuahuas have a fascinating history that traces back to ancient civilizations in Mexico. They are believed to be descendants of a small companion dog called the Techichi, which was kept by the Toltec civilization over a thousand years ago. Chihuahuas get their name from the Mexican state of Chihuahua, where they were first recognized as a breed. They gained popularity in the late 19th century when they were discovered by tourists and eventually found their way into the US.

Size and Weight

Chihuahuas are one of the smallest dog breeds in the world. On average, they stand only 6 to 9 inches high and weigh between 2 and 6 pounds. Due to their small size, they require careful handling and supervision, especially when interacting with larger dogs or young children.

Energy Level and Exercise Requirements

Chihuahuas have moderate energy levels, but they are known for their bursts of activity and playfulness. They generally enjoy short bursts of exercise and interactive play sessions. Despite their small size, they still require regular exercise to maintain their health and prevent weight gain.

Daily walks, interactive toys, and short play sessions can provide them with sufficient mental and physical stimulation. It's important to remember that Chihuahuas are small and can tire easily, so it's best to avoid overly strenuous activities, especially during hot weather.

Due to Chihuahuas’ small size and delicate bodies, most owners choose to walk their Chihuahuas on a harness for safety reasons.

What is the Best Chihuahua Harness?

For Chihuahuas, like many other toy breeds, it is safer to walk them on a harness instead of a flat collar. Chihuahuas have delicate necks and throats, and using a collar can put excessive pressure on these areas. The trachea of a Chihuahua can be particularly sensitive, and pulling or jerking on a collar during walks can potentially lead to tracheal damage or injuries. A harness distributes the pressure more evenly across the chest and shoulders, reducing the risk of harm to the neck.

When selecting the best Chihuahua dog harness, it's important to choose one that is meant for small dogs and fits properly. Ensure that your Chihuahua’s harness is snug but not too tight, allowing for comfortable movement while preventing escape.

At Joyride Harness, Our extensive size range of comfortable, escape-proof harnesses can accommodate toy breeds like Chihuahuas. Most Chihuahuas do not like things going over their head. We designed Joyride Harness as an easy-on/easy-off solution with dogs like this in mind.

While Chihuahuas are not the most active breed, they are known for their spirited and sometimes stubborn nature. This means they can be prone to pulling or trying to escape when on walks due to their curiosity or reactive tendencies. Using a properly fitted Joyride Harness provides better control over their movements and prevents them from slipping out of their collar. It also reduces the likelihood of injuries.

The other benefit of Joyride Harness for tiny dogs is our built-in handle. A handled harness is great for Chihuahuas because you can quickly grab them whenever necessary. Whether your pup is tired of walking or you need to quickly lift them to safety, you can take comfort in knowing you have control and won’t put pressure on your delicate Chi’s neck.

When it comes to exercising this playful breed, comfort and safety are important. Keep your baby safe with the best Chihuahua dog harness: Joyride Harness.

Works for a horrid Chihuahua

My rescue Chihuahua is really awful. Not his fault, but it's so frustrating. I couldn't get a harness on him if my life depended on it. He would attack, bite, snarl, lunge, bite some more.. and I'm the one he likes! A friend mentioned the Joyride Harness. I watched several videos. I was skeptical. My poor little dog has been so traumatized. But I figured we had nothing to lose & I bought the Rainbow in XS. I've had that Joyride harness on & off every day for 2 weeks now! He kinda hates the over the head thing but I'm fast. We are now going for walks! After almost six years!! My 5 pound attack monster loves to go for walks and he is so perfect on a leash. He can walk for miles! I'm so so so glad I got this harness.

Easiest dog harness!

Wonderful! Our littlest chihuahua used to fight stepping into his old harness. It’s taken a little adjustment but he has figured out how easy this new one is!

I love this harness. Little Buddy likes it much better than his old harness. He's very stout in the chest for a chihuahua, so I got the small instead of x-small. It fits him great!

Quincy’s Harness

This harness is the first of many harness purchases that has finally given me some control over my dog! He is a 12 lb chihuahua that could lead a snow dog team! He only has one speed, Full Steam Ahead!

My chihuahua Zeke would always pull on a leash and the collar would make him choke. So I definitely needed a harness. This harness is sturdy and secure. Zeke loves it. No more choking! Very pleased with this purchase. You will not be disappointed.
