Vital Stats

  • Size: 24+ inches
  • Weight: 55+ pounds
  • Lifespan: 7 - 12 years

Large dog breeds are characterized by their substantial size and often have a robust build, strong muscles, and a commanding presence. Some of the most popular dog breeds are large, including Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, and Siberian Huskies. Dogs who weigh over 99 pounds are usually considered giant breeds. Some of the most popular giant breeds include Great Danes, St. Bernards, and Mastiffs.

While each breed has its own individual characteristics and traits, as a whole, large breed dogs are popular for their versatility. Many large breeds of dogs have friendly, gentle, and loyal temperaments, making them excellent companions and family pets. Additionally, their size and strength make them ideal working dogs. Large breed dogs have been historically bred for various purposes and tasks, such as herding, guarding, search and rescue, and police or military work. Some large breeds also make excellent service dogs.

Size and Weight

Large breed dogs are known for their size and stature. While there is some variation in size within the category of large breeds, they generally have certain characteristics in common. For height, large breed dogs typically stand over 24 inches at the shoulder. For weight, large breeds weigh at least 50 pounds, although some breeds weigh well over 100 pounds.

Energy Level and Exercise Requirements

The activity level and energy levels of large dog breeds can vary depending on the specific breed and individual characteristics. While it's true that some large dog breeds tend to be more active and energetic than smaller breeds, it's not a universal rule. There are large breeds that have lower energy levels and are more laid-back.

Generally, large dog breeds have the physical capacity for higher levels of activity and exercise due to their size and strength. Many large breeds were historically bred for specific tasks such as herding, guarding, or pulling carts, which required them to have endurance and stamina.

Regardless of the breed, regular exercise and mental stimulation are essential for the overall well-being of any dog. Due to the size and strength of these dogs, many large breed owners prefer to walk their big dogs using a harness.

What is the Best Large Dog Harness?

When it comes to walking large breed dogs, using a harness is generally a better option compared to a traditional collar. For one, it gives the walker more control and provides a safer walking experience. Big dogs have more strength and pulling power, so you need a heavy-duty large dog  harness they can’t escape from.

At Joyride Harness, we created our harness with large dogs in mind. Not only does our size range accommodate dogs up to 140 pounds, but our heavy-duty materials can withstand even the heaviest pullers. And if you’re training your dog not to pull, our three-ring system is a great feature. You can attach a standard leash to one of the side rings to stop your Bulldog from pulling forward or use a double-ended leash attached to two rings to give you even further control.

The other benefit of Joyride Harness for large dogs is our built-in handle. Sometimes, large dogs weigh more than their owners, which can make maintaining control a challenge. With our handled harness, you get an additional safety net if you need to grab your dog quickly.

When it comes to exercising strong, large dogs, control and safety are both key. Keep your large baby safe with the best harness for large dogs that pull: Joyride Harness.

What Size Harness Should I Buy for a Bulldog?

Most large breed dogs will fit in our XL or XXL dog harness. Our XLsize is suitable for dogs between 60 and 85 pounds, while our XXL can accommodate dogs 85 to 140 pounds. If your dog is tall but slim or is a large breed puppy, we recommend using our size chart to find the best fit by girth.

Best harness EVER

I have an oversized 5 month old German Shepherd (60lbs) and he has no idea of his size. When we would attempt to go for a walk before we had the Joyride Harness it was not very much fun for either one of us. Since we purchased the Joyride Harness walking is fun and a tired puppy is a happy puppy.

For the people wondering about size. Tucker is 157 pounds and stands at my hip. This harness fits not only him but my smaller 125 lb Newf and 130 lb Pyr/St Bernard mix. The best thing is the handle on top. My dogs are giant breeds and ages 10+. Two are very weak in hindquarters and this allows me to lift if they are falling or help safely down steps getting out of our SUV.
