How to Keep Your Dog Calm During Thunderstorms: Expert Advice

Lots of dogs get really scared when there are thunderstorms. The loud thunder and sudden changes in air pressure can make them feel afraid and worried. Today, we're going to talk about different ways to make your dog feel better when there's a thunderstorm.

Why Are Dogs Afraid of Storms?

You might wonder why your dog gets so scared during a storm, even though you know they're safe. Well, there are a few reasons. First, storms have things that bother a dog's senses. The loud noises from thunder and bright lightning flashes can be too much for their sharp hearing. Also, the quick changes in air pressure and the electricity in the air can make them feel uneasy and restless.

When all of this happens, dogs want to hide, but it's hard to hide from a storm all around you. This mix of too much happening and their natural feelings can make them scared and worried. They might shake, hide, or look for comfort from you. But don't worry, there are ways to help your dog feel better during a storm.

Keep Calm and Carry On

Dogs are really good at knowing how their owners feel. If you get scared or nervous during a thunderstorm, your dog might get even more worried. So, try to stay calm, talk to your dog in a gentle and comforting way, and show them that you’re not scared. If they see that you aren’t worried, they might be less worried.

Create a Safe Haven

When dogs feel scared, they like to find a safe place to go. You can make a special and cozy spot for your dog to hide in when there's a thunderstorm. It could be a comfy corner, a crate, or even a small, quiet room like a bathroom or a closet. Put your dog's favorite toys, blankets, and their bed in that spot to make it comfy and inviting. You can also play soft music or use a fan or white noise machine to help hide the sound of thunder.

Offer Food and Water

A few dogs get too worried to eat when there's a storm, so don't make them eat if they don't want to. But it's a good idea to have some of their favorite food around. This can help take their mind off the storm. Also, fresh water is really important because when dogs are scared, they pant– and that makes them thirsty.

Getting Your Dog Ready for Storms

You can also help your dog by training them to ignore storm sounds. This is called desensitization and it is a slow, gentle way to prepare your dog and help them be less afraid. Here’s how you do it:

  • Find a good video of thunder sounds (there are many on YouTube) and start playing these sounds at low volume while you’re doing things with your dog.

  • Over several sessions, gradually increase the volume.

  • Every time you play thunder sounds, play with your dog and offer them treats. This helps them learn that the noises are ok and not scary.

Compassion and Compression

Thunder shirts or anxiety wraps are designed to provide gentle, constant pressure to your dog's body. It’s like a big hug! This pressure can keep them calm during thunderstorms. You need to make sure the wrap fits well. Also, make sure they are used to it before storms. This will teach them that the wrap is associated with comfort, not fear.

Thunderstorm-Proof Your Home

Prevent your dog from escaping during a thunderstorm by ensuring all doors and windows are securely closed. If your dog is crate-trained, placing them in a crate can also prevent them from running away in fear. Blackout curtains can help, since they hide the lightning flashes.

If your dog is prone to running away, you should have them on a harness and leash during a storm– even inside the house. This will help make sure they don’t get loose outside if a door blows open. Make sure that the harness is safe, secure, and comfortable. A handle will make it easier to grab if your dog tries to make a run for it.

Thunderstorms can be scary for both dogs and their owners. but with the right strategies and patience, you can help keep your dog calm and comfortable. Remember that every dog is unique! It may take time to find the solution that works best for your furry friend. But if you create a safe space and keep your dog comfortable, you can help them feel less afraid during a storm.
