Celebrate Christmas Safely with Your Dog (December 2024 FREE DESKTOP & MOBILE WALLPAPER)
The holidays are a magical time to share with family, friends, and of course, your furry best friend! But with all the excitement, it’s easy to forget that some festive traditions can be a little overwhelming—or even dangerous—for our pups. Here are 5 simple tips to help you celebrate Christmas safely with your dog while keeping the holiday spirit alive.
Watch Out for Decorations
Dogs love shiny, dangly things, so decorations can be super tempting for them. Ornaments, tinsel, and lights might look like toys but can be dangerous if your dog gets a hold of them. Try to hang fragile or small ornaments higher up on the tree and cover any electrical cords so they’re out of reach.
Stick to Dog-Friendly Snacks
We know it’s tempting to sneak your dog a piece of Christmas dinner, but a lot of holiday foods aren’t safe for them. Things like chocolate, garlic, onions, grapes, and even sweet treats with xylitol are a no-go. Instead, give your pup their own festive snack, like a dog-friendly cookie or a Kong stuffed with peanut butter.
Give Them a Chill Spot
The holidays can get pretty loud and busy, which might stress your dog out. Make sure they have a quiet, comfy space where they can relax if things get overwhelming. A cozy bed or crate with their favorite blanket or toy in a quieter room works perfectly.
Be Careful with Holiday Plants
Did you know some Christmas plants, like poinsettias, mistletoe, and holly, can be toxic to dogs? If your pup is a plant chewer, it’s best to skip the real stuff and go for fake plants instead. If you want greenery, rosemary or small fir plants are safer options.
Keep Gifts Safe from Curious Noses
Dogs love to sniff around, and those presents under the tree might be too tempting to ignore! Bows, strings, and scented gifts could lead to some holiday mischief—or worse. To be safe, keep gifts in a dog-free spot or wait until Christmas morning to put them under the tree.
