Can a Dog Wear a Harness All the Time?

Can a Dog Wear a Harness All the Time?

We all know that harnesses are very comfortable for dogs and perfect for walking. But what about keeping your dog in a harness all day? Can a dog wear a harness all the time, or might it be detrimental?

Today, we want to talk about why the industry has shifted from collars to harnesses, and the right habits to use harnesses wisely!

Advantages of Using a Dog Harness

Harnesses are like the yoga mats of dog gear—they evenly spread out the pressure across your pup's back and chest, keeping that delicate neck safe. No more worrying about trachea trouble, especially for pull-happy pups or breeds that huff and puff a little more than others.

Harnesses are useful with dogs with neck trauma, arthritis, or surgery since they can be manually handled to avoid any pain. Most vets also recommend harnesses with small breeds that are prone to easily having collapsed tracheas, such as Chihuahuas and Yorkshire Terriers. For small breeds, a chihuahua harness with a handle can be particularly helpful to ensure extra control and safety.

Furthermore, it's less stressful to walk dogs who pull less with a harness. It's easier to maintain better control with reactive dogs or with dogs who are being taught to stop pulling while walking.

Potential Risks from Constantly Wearing a Harness

Despite the many advantages, a dog that constantly wears a harness may encounter a few issues. The major issue includes skin irritation, particularly where straps come into contact with skin and hair. Thick-furred dogs may develop tangles underneath their straps, something that may be painful as well as cause skin infections.

This is also an area where bacteria prosper since moisture becomes trapped between surfaces. The issue becomes exacerbated during summer months or any time your dog becomes wet, leading to skin issues.

An ill-fitting harness may restrict a dog's movement and ability to breathe. Of course, dogs require room to be able to stretch, scratch, and walk naturally.

So, can you leave dog harness on all the time? No, constant wear can even cause a dog's muscles to be strained or alter your pet's gait with time.

How to Fit a Dog Harness

A comfy harness fit isn’t just nice—it’s non-negotiable. Make sure you can slide two fingers between your dog and the harness. And don’t get too comfy yourself—check the fit regularly because dogs, like us, can gain or lose a little fluff.

Pro tip: Perform a quick skin check every so often. Look for redness, irritation, or missing fur. Pay extra attention where the straps rub or dig in. A happy pup is a comfy pup.

Choose breathable materials where possible, and consider having a few harnesses to change between. This way, they can dry right out between uses. Wash the harnesses regularly according to the manufacturer's directions to prevent bacteria from developing. Joyride Harnesses use durable materials for long-lasting results.

Using a harness during activities such as walking, training, or classes has advantages and with proper wear, can be worn for long periods. But you shouldn’t leave the harness on indefinitely.

Selecting the Best Solution for Your Dog

Harnesses are brilliant for walking and training dogs, but your canine friend also needs relaxation from a harness to allow their skin to breathe and their body to naturally move.

Can you leave a harness on a dog all the time? No. But the right harness will become a reliable partner for those long walks. Why not explore our selection today?
