The term Pitbull/Pit Bull generally refers to several different breeds and their descendants, including the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and occasionally the Bull Terrier. These breeds share a common ancestry and physical characteristics.

Pitbull-type dogs are medium-sized dogs with a muscular build and a strong jaw, and a distinctive head shape with a broad skull and powerful neck muscles. Historically, Pit Bulls were bred for bull-baiting and later for dog fighting. However, it's essential to note that responsible breeders have worked to breed out aggressive traits, and modern Pit Bulls can be loving, loyal, and gentle companions. In fact, Pit Bulls often display a friendly and affectionate nature toward humans, and they are known for being good with children when properly socialized.

Size and Weight

Because Pit Bulls encompass several different types of breeds, their size and weight can vary. Staffordshire Bull Terriers, for instance, are a small to medium breed with a height ranging from 14-16 inches and a weight range of 24-80 pounds. American Staffordshire Terriers (interchangeable with American Pit Bull Terrier in the US) are also medium-sized dogs with a height ranging from 17-19 inches and a weight range of 40-70 pounds. Of course, since many dogs labeled as Pit Bulls are mixed breeds, their size and weight can fall outside of these ranges.

Energy Level and Exercise Requirements

Pit Bulls are classified as terriers, which means feisty and energetic go hand-in-hand with these breeds. They are high-energy dogs who require regular exercise and playtime. These dogs enjoy walking, hiking, playing fetch, and dog sports like agility. They really enjoy spending time with their people.

While different breeds fall under the Pit Bull umbrella, one thing they have in common is they are strong and muscular. They are also sometimes known to be willful, even stubborn. This means that when it comes to walking and training, control and security are very important. For most Pit Bull owners, the best and safest way to walk their Pittie is with a harness.

What is the Best Pitbull Harness?

For strong and active dogs like Pit Bulls, the best harness is one that is comfortable and secure for you and your dog. Most Pit Bulls have a stocky, muscular build, so you need a fully adjustable harness that will give you a proper fit, making the harness escape-proof.

Another important factor when considering the best harness for a Pitbull is durability. We construct our no-pull harnesses of durable, quality materials that can withstand even the strongest pullers. And if you’re currently training your dog not to pull, we make that easier, too.

At Joyride Harness, we designed our harness with Pits in mind. Our escape-proof Pitbull harness has a three-ring proven to help stop pulling. When you attach a standard leash to one of the side rings, it will prevent your pup from pulling forward. You can also use a double-ended leash attached to two rings to give you even further control if needed. For added control, our harnesses also have a built-in handle so you can easily grab a hold of your dog, even if your leash becomes unattached.

And the best part? Our heavy-duty Pitbull harnesses are durable and easy to wash, so they can withstand even the most adventurous Pittie. We also incorporate reflective material into our harnesses for increased visibility during nighttime adventures!

What Size Harness Should I Buy for a Pitbull?

Most of our customers with adult Pitbulls and Pit Mixes purchase large or XL dog harnesses for their dogs. Our large size is suitable for dogs between 40 and 60 pounds while our XL is suitable for dogs between 60 and 85 pounds. However, for dogs like Pitbulls who have wider chests, we recommend using our size chart to go by girth. If your dog has a wide chest or shoulders and is between sizes, we recommend sizing up for the best fit.

Joyride harness

I am very pleased with the purple harness I purchased. I also have the red Buffalo check one for my other pit bull. They are so easy and quick to put on and fit very well. I have great control while walking them and they are comfortable on my dogs. Thank you for your efficient and speedy service.

Love the harness

I bought a harness for my pittie after my MIL referred me. She has a German Shepherd/Rot mix. Her harness has held up against her pulling and against her not liking other dogs. So I figured it would be secure for my pittie-he loves all people and especially dogs so he does pull to try to greet them haha. I feel secure in knowing it fits him well, doesn’t cause any issues and is secure.

My dog came from a home where leashes and certainly harnesses were not used. So he was actually afraid of them. Now he is all wags when his harness and leash are grabbed because it means a walk.

Strong puller approved!

perfect! my pittie is only 56 pounds and not your average big and beefy pure pit bull but he sure knows how to pull you like crazy! I’ve fallen in the process and have a few bruises here and there lol but ever since we got his joyride harness it is so much easier to control him and I also know he’s not straining his neck or choking himself which is the most important part. Thank you joyride!

Love this harness and leash

I rescued (she really rescued me) Fergie last year. She is a pit mix. Like us all, She came with a few issues. I have gone through many harnesses and leashes this past year trying to find one that works for her. I’m happy to say, I have finally found that with Joyride. I think the fit makes her feel more confident and it makes me feel like I have more control while walking.
